BARGAIN BRED RACING SERIES NEWS

It was a day of firsts on Bargain Derby Week. For the first time the Broadway Sprint was moved to Derby day and we ended up with 7 races for bargains on Derby Day. There were over 100  nominations for the big day and it was one for the ages.

The Bargain Derby was won for the first time by a filly as Teejay's You Me and Them rolled from off the pace to beat the boys by almost three lengths. She was the most accomplished runner coming in and ran like a favorite crushing the boys. Ultimate Betrayal showed good improvement off his fifth place run in the Ozark stalking and hanging around for second. Maiden African Porcupine made steady progress from the back to get up for third and looks like the more distance the better for him.

The Oaks field was probably happy to see You Me and Them go in the Derby as that left the Oaks a bit wide open. It was front runner Sweet Talk that took advantage making just her third career start. She only broke her maiden in April and improved nicely as she was left alone on the lead taking advantage cruising to a length and three quarters win. The Desparado double was capped off with South Ridge's stalking trip. She stalked and closed a good bit of ground in the stretch but it was not enough to catch her stablemate. Flying Enzee took a big step forward running her best career speed figure to get up for third in the Oaks.

Gowan's Rampant Ego set the pace and looked strong grabbing his first BBRS win. He was third in last year's 100 Guineas and as a four year old he has really found good form having won three and finishing second twice in five starts. He earned a 103 speed figure and looks to be a player in the turf mile division this year. Brilliant Notation showed he can run as well at a mile as he does at longer distances as he ran very nicely coming from well back to finish second. The filly Mimbo Hall also showed a great turn of foot to closer from well off the pace finishing third. All earned really nice speed figures.

The Stayer at a mile and a half was witness to a couple of really fast bargains. At the Waxworks has now won six in a row as he rolled to a three length win earning a 104 speed figure. He stalked and then pounced on the strong pace of CT's Rocket who was stubborn but had to settle for second. Ko Ko Shan last year's winner settled for third.

The Broadway Sprint was the only race not held in Tennessee. New York hosted the full field of sprinters. Roaring Hawkz, second in the Bargain Bowl last year, stalked and pounced in a very spirited stretch run as he ran down pace setting Perfect Straw, and held off hard charging Hrtv is Better.  Perfect Straw had spurted away to a two length lead at the top of the stretch with Roaring Hawkz and Hrtv is Better bearing down. It was a thrilling finish as Roaring Hawkz won, Hrtv is Better finished second and Perfect Straw had to settle for third.

We had a really exciting two year old maiden winner on the turf this week as well. 19-1 Bayou Steam earned a 73 speed figure for his winning effort. For this time of year that is a top notch speed figure, runner up Pile it Up earned a 71 speed figure. The dirt runners were pretty competitive Otara Battle edged out Manilla Gorilla II at the wire.
