Birdstone (15133)
Birdstone is by Grindstone. His dam sire is Storm Bird and his dam’s dam sire is Silent Screen. The horse that knocked the wind from a nation ready to celebrate a Triple Crown winner. Birdstone is standing for one tenth the stud fee of Smarty Jones. He only raced nine times in a short career winning five. Three of those were grade I wins including the Champagne as a two year olds, The Belmont foiling Smarty Jones’s Triple Crown bid and he Travers against older horses. He attempted the Breeder’s Cup Classic but was no factor.
Birdstone only has five winners so far which is no real surprise. He does have an allowance winner. His fastest runner’s dam sire is Seattle Slew with Northern Dancer as a dam’s dam sire. A.P. Indy has been used as a dam sire several times along with several other solid dam sires.
Birdstone has plenty of stamina to pass along to his progeny. His pedigree sets up in a way that grandsons of Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer will work well. For Mr. Prospector a grandson as a dam sire creates a 5X4 inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and a grandson of Northern Dancer wod create a 4X4 inbreeding to Northern Dancer. Other Raise a Native line sires would seem good fits as well (Alydar, Affirmed, Majestic Light). Throw in the usual suspects like Seattle Slew, Ribot, Roberto, Bold Ruler, Damascus and Buckpasser.

Birdstone was a bit of a late bloomer. He did win a grade I at two but there is no doubt he was at his best midway through his three year old season. He will likely produce some good two year olds but you may not get a clear look into his ability as a sire until his runners get older. He does have quite a bit of stamina and those type sires tend to produce a slower developing runner. His runners should love the dirt and routes. |
