Delaware Township (13510)

I am always on the look out of the easiest spots to place my horses. This is the time of year that I believe two-year-old sprinters start to become over looked. From now until about June of next year if you have a decent sprinter you can earn a lot of BPs and maybe get a stakes runner. Most people are starting to stretch out their two year olds this time of year. So the maiden sprints often times will be shorter fields with lesser competition. The same will go for the allowance level and in some cases the stakes level. With that in mind this week I will take a look at a sire prospect that should be able to produce decent to good sprinters.

Real Life- Delaware Township is by Notebook. His dam sire is Sunny North and his dam’s dam sire is Hail the Prince. He was a good runner in real life winning stakes from ages two to five beating some very good racehorses. He won eleven of twenty-one races and nearly a million dollars in purses. His best win was probably the grade I Frank J De Francis Memorial Dash over Kona Gold, Xtra Heat and Caller One. He never really was able to carry that over into a Breeder’s Cup but nonetheless a very good racehorse.

His breeding is interesting. His dosage index is 1.40 indicating a good deal of stamina. He does have a couple of stamina sires in his pedigree and Notebook produced some solid route horses over the last few years. When using a sire like this aiming for a sprinter the stamina present in the pedigree can give the horse some versatility. Meaning the offspring is not just all speed and if he can’t sprint there is a good chance he can get a route of ground. Delaware Township’s real life progeny have yet to hit the track.

Sim Life – Delaware Township has just two stakes winners from thirty-six sim runners. One has done it sprinting on the dirt the other has won stakes at a mile and a graded stakes at a mile and an eighth on the turf. His runners have been pretty good up to about a mile and an eighth on dirt or turf. The success he has had on turf is a little surprising but should add more versatility to our runner.

He has been bred to some top-notch dams sires like Seattle Slew (4 times), Gone West, Wild Again, and Forty Niner.  One of the Seattle Slew dam sired offspring is the turf stakes winner but the rest of the above mentioned dam sires produced decent runners allowance winners in some cases. That is a little disappointing considering the quality of the dam sire.

Of the thirty-six runners seven are two-year-olds. A couple of the seven look decent at this point and again some good dam sires have been used like Danehill and Dehere. I am disappointed at the limited production of his two year olds. His lack of production could be a reason not to consider using him as a sire but I look at it as a challenge.

Breeding Suggestions – There is obviously some talent that Delaware Township passes along to his runners the trick will be trying to find something that will work. His fastest runner used Believe It as dam sire and Bold Bidder as dam’s dam sire. That created inbreeding to Bold Ruler and In Reality both of whom shows up in the fifth generation of his progeny. Gone West, Machivellian, Miswaki and Forty Niner have been used as dam sires. Even though there appears to be a lack of success using Mr. Prospector line sires I think Marquetry and Quiet American will blend well with Delaware Township. Just think speed when looking for dam sires. Cure the Blues has Dr. Fager and Bold Ruler in the bottom half of his pedigree. Is there a better producer of sprinters for the price than Phone Trick? Gilded Time could be a solid choice. From the Seattle Slew line Slew O’ Gold may be a solid sprint influence dam sire. Breeding back to the In Reality line is an option, Damascus line, Nasrullah, and Raise a Native lines should work well.

Bargain Bred – Delaware Township gets down to about 45 BPs by the end of the week. There is a solid chance of getting a pretty decent bargain bred with him. Again I would look for speed influenced dam sires from popular lines. Iron Constitution is a solid sprint dam sire. Dr. Blum from the Dr. Fager line and little used Commemorate seem good choices. I really like Unreal Zeal with his Mr. Prospector X Dr. Fager bloodlines.

What to Expect – There is a lot of stamina to go with the speed and in real life it took some time for Delaware Township to reach his peak. It may take some time to develop but at least you should have a runner that can run well over several years. I would expect decent production as a two year old and improvement, depending on how often you race him, through his four or even five year old year. Try both surfaces with his progeny. He is not a real turfy sire but he has produced a good turf runner or two. Also stretch him out over a mile at some point you never know what you might get.
