Malibu Moon (10915)

Sometimes horses with nearly every major sire line in their pedigree can be tough to breed. This week we will take a look at a younger sire, Malibu Moon. He is having a very good year in real life with a couple of two-year olds and has a great pedigree. His sim runners have also been pretty solid so far and he is on the inexpensive side at the end of the week.

Real Life- Malibu Moon is by A.P. Indy. His dam sire is Mr. Prospector and his dam’s dam sire is Green Dancer. On the track he only raced twice a two year old with a maiden win and a second in an entry level allowance. In his pedigree you have Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Buckpasser, Mr. Prospector, Nijinsky II, Northern Dancer, and Nasrullah.

This year his best two year old has been Declan’s Moon. Delcan’s Moon is inbred to Mr. Prospector.  He won the grade II Delmar Futurity this year in impressive fashion. He is also the sire of somewhat well known three-year-old Perfect Moon. Perfect Moon’s dam sire is from the Halo line. His runners have run well on turf and dirt. He has a nice blend of speed and stamina. His runners have shown speed but have been able to stretch out.

Sim Life – Malibu Moon has forty-four sim runners. No stakes winners to date but he has eight allowance winners. His fastest runner’s dam sire is Binalong (In Reality). The In Reality line is present in another one of his good runners (Cee’s Tizzy). In the sim and In Reality lines have always seemed to go well with Seattle Slew lines. The Damascus line through Marsayas has produced a pretty solid runner. Breeding to Northern Dancer line sires has worked. His runners have run well on both surfaces. His runners can get some distance but you must be careful not to breed him to too much speed.

Of his forty-four runners sixteen are two year olds. His better two year olds have been bred back to Mr. Prospector with Numerous, Woodman, Leo Castelli, and Allen’s Prospect. I am not a huge fan of breeding that way but it has worked. A few have run in the eighties and most of them say thirteen have run better than a 60-speed figure and look very usable if you don’t get a great one.

Breeding Suggestions – I really like breeding back to the Seattle Slew line with Alydar and In Reality. Using Alydar or a son of Alydar will inbreed to Raise a Native and that is present in one of his fastest runners in the sim (Binalong). I also love the Halo line with Seattle Slew. To add stamina using Ribot line sires or Princequillo line sires are good choices. Northern Dancer line sires seem a good fit like Danzig and Storm Cat. Inbreeding back to Mr. Prospector has worked so we can’t count those out.

I would want to be sure to breed a little stamina back in him to hopefully get a horse that can get classic distances. I really like to use Sea-Bird in the dam’s dam slot just for this purpose especially with Alydar. Son’s of Alydar would give you a 4X4 inbreeding to Raise a Native. Some of his better sons are Alysheba, Jeblar, Easy Goer, Saratoga Six, Strike the Gold, and Turkoman. Majestic Light could be another solid choice from the Raise a Native line as well as Affirmed.

Bargain Bred - Malibu Moon gets down to about 81 BPs at the end of the week. You can find a couple of really cheap sires to pair with him but I don’t like breeding bargains that way. I will throw out a couple of suggestions anyway for those interested.

What to Expect – He was a quick two-year-old. Both of his sim and real life two year olds have been pretty good so his of spring are very likely to run well right off the bat. They will probably be best as three-year-olds and start to fade late in their four-year-old season. If lightly raced you can stretch them further or if you breed your runner as a three year old. That pattern has held true in several of his older runners. As always try them on both surfaces. He has produced well on both and has a couple of runners as good on turf as dirt. His runners seem to do best between 8f and 9f but can sprint and in some occasions go much longer.
