More Than Ready (13121)

What a monster at two. His explosive win in the Hopeful was brilliant. More Than Ready seemed to have all the right things that go into a Derby winner. Turning for home in he Derby that year he assumed the lead but just did not have enough left in the tank to hold off Fusiachi Pegasus. He finished a forgotten fourth in the Derby.

Real Life- More Than Ready is by Southern Halo. His dam sire is Woodman and his dam’s dam sire is Naskra. His pedigree has a lot of speed influence. His dosage index of 2.11 also would indicate there is a decent amount of stamina present. He seemed to favor the speed as a racehorse. His two wins at three were both at seven furlongs. He could get a route of ground his problem was running in a year there were some good three year olds.

He finished second four times as a three year old. He got run down by Mighty in the long stretch at the Fair Grounds, failed to run down High Yield in the Bluegrass, ran a good fourth in the Derby, finished second to Albert The Great in the Dwyer, and finished fourth behind Dixie Union, Captain Steve, and Milwaukee Brew in the Haskell. He was competing just fine in the route races beating a lot of good horses but he could not get that illusive win.

His connections then dropped him back into sprints. They took a horse that ran routes all spring and summer and tried to get him ready to beat the best sprinters in the country in just a couple of sprint runs at seven furlongs. It did not work as he finished fifth to Kona Gold that year in the Sprint. Where else would you have run him? The Breeder’s Cup Mile? No War Chant was too tough or he could have tried the Classic but he would have had to compete with Tiznow and Giant’s Causeway.  It was just a tough year to be a three year old.

His real life runners are just now hitting the track and he already has a stakes winner. He will likely be overlooked at stud having to compete against those same horses he raced against.

Sim Life – More Than Ready has been a sire in the sim long enough to have five year olds. Of eighty-eight runners he has seven stakes winners all but one are multiple stakes winners. Interesting to note his percentage of route stakes winners is slightly higher than sprint stakes winners. He has produced a few really fast runners.  Nasrullah, and Buckpasser, are in just about every one of his top runners. Inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, Northern Dancer, Halo and Turn To are present in a few pedigrees.

His two year olds do not look as well bred this year as some of his other crops were.  His runners have yet to earn a stakes win so far. He has actually produced a couple of solid turf two year olds. For the most part he has not been a good turf sire.

Breeding Suggestions – On the Vinery Farms website they suggest many solid bloodlines. His pedigree is such that Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector show up in his progeny’s fourth generation so using a grandson of Northern Dancer or Mr. Prospector, as dam sire would produce a 4X4 inbreeding. What is interesting to me is the way Buckpasser blends with him in the sim and that he is a recommended brood mare sire in real life as well as the inbreeding to Turn-To. I think he is one of those sires capable of breeding a Sprint champion or a Derby winner.

For sprinting I like the dam sires like Relaunch, Marquetry, Phone Trick, Seeking the Gold, Raja Baba, Conquistador Cielo, Slew O Gold.

To try for a runner suited more for the classics I like dam sires from these lines Alydar, Secretariat, Hoist the Flag, Nijinsky, Unbridled, Pleasant Colony, Ribot, Buckpasser and Princequillo. Silver Buck I think could make an ideal dam’s dam sire for More Than Ready.

What to Expect – More Than Ready should produce good two year olds. His runners will mostly like running on the dirt at in between distances like 7f to 9f. If your runner is just not going any where switch surfaces before you get rid of him or her. Although he does not produce very many turf runners you may have one. His older runners are running well a five so if you manage your horse you can get several good years from them.
