Mutakddim

This week the Breeding Corner spotlight falls on Hill ‘n’ Dale farm’s Mutakddim. The thing that struck me the most when I was researching him was his stellar pedigree. His sire is Seeking The Gold, his dam sire is Seattle Slew and his dam’s dam sire is Northern Dancer. With that kind of pedigree one has to be smart with choosing dam sires and dam’s dam sires. 

Mutakddim did his racing in England. He raced at ages two, three, and four. He did not get a stakes win until he was four and that was a listed stakes. He did place in a couple of graded races as a four-year-old as well. With that kind of a pedigree that had to be a little disappointing for his connections. He is a dual hemisphere sire standing in Argentina. His runners in the US have really excelled on dirt. Even though his dosage index indicates he has some stamina he was not raced much beyond a mile.

Real Life – Lady Tak is Mutakddim’s best runner to date. When you look at a list of his top runners of the first nine listed six are fillies. On the Hill N Dale website a listing of his best runners before October 27, 2003 shows that the top ten earners were all fillies. That is amazing and probably insures Mutakddim will be a top dam sire in the coming years. The best runners in real life have been inbred 4 X 4 to Northern Dancer. Mutakddim has been bred twenty-eight times to Southern Halo mares with very good success. Lady Tak is inbred to Northern Dancer 3 X 4 through Lucky North.

 Another inbreeding used with success is to Raise a Native 3 X 4 using Alydar and Affirmed as dam sires. Any of their sons would produce a 4X4 inbreeding to Raise a Native. Also Logical has been used several times in Argentina, which inbreeds back to Buckpasser.

If none of the inbreeding thrills your soul the Turn-To line has crossed well with Mutakddim. Southern Halo is from that line but breeding to Roberto or sons of Roberto would eliminate any inbreeding and that cross has worked.

Sim Life – Currently Mutakddim only has 36 Sim progeny. His fastest runner was in a turf sprint and ran a 107-speed figure. (Not that great) He has only four runners that have posted a speed figure over 100. Three of those four are female. That to me is quite a coincidence. He has been bred with Lucky North six times although no exact duplicates of Lady Tak. Simmers have used interesting sire combinations cheap, expensive, heavily inbred. Southern Halo, and Halo were used as dam sires once each but nothing else from the Turn-To line had been used. There were a couple of Ribot line sires used in some of the better runners. He has produced both turf and dirt runners his fastest so far sprinting. I would have to say this is a sire simmers have misused for the most part.

Breeding Suggestions – Creating 4X4 inbreeding to Northern Dancer would seem the thing to do but it has been done quite a few times without much success in the Sim. The Turn-To line of sires seems very appealing. Dynaformer, Red Ransom, Kris S., Lear Fan, Cure The Blues, or Devil’s Bag. I might also try Alydar, or Affirmed. Southern Halo has worked so well in real life I might be tempted to use him as well. I would almost prefer a filly to a colt with him.

Bargain Bred Suggestions – Since Mutakddim is falling below 40 BPs by weeks end you should be able to get a good bargain bred out of him. Since he did not seem to really develop until he was four I would be patient his offspring. Mutakddim X Celestial Storm X Crowned Prince
