Smarty Jones (15277)

Smarty Jones is by Elusive Quality. His dam sire is Smile and his dam’s dam sire is Foolish Pleasure. Everyone has heard of this guy. He was only the fourth undefeated Kentucky Derby winner in the history of the race and just missed winning the first Triple Crown in twenty-six years. His only loss came at the hands of Birdstone in the final jumps of the Belmont. That was also the final race of his career. He ended his career with eight wins from nine starts and over seven million in earnings (five of which were a bonus for winning the Arkansas Derby and the Kentucky Derby).

His working class roots and the story surrounding the horse captured the attention of horse racing fans and non sports fans alike. There has been a little debate about how he will do in the breeding shed. His pedigree is not regal by any means however his sire line is pretty strong. His pedigree sets up very well for inbreeding to Northern Dancer or Mr. Prospector and there is no shortage of those type mares. He will also do well with Seattle Slew, Ribot, Damascus, Buckpasser and Roberto lines.  I have doubted his potential as a sire but the more you look at potential dam sires the more I would say he stands a very good chance at being a successful stud.

He is off to a roaring start in the sim with eleven winners already with nearly two hundred thousand in earnings. He already has an allowance winner and has been bred to some very classy dam sires like Seattle Slew, War Chant, Fusaichi Pegasus, Seeking the Gold, and Danzig. The dam sire of his fastest runner and allowance winner is Stravinsky.

Smarty Jones’s problem will come in the area of stamina. His sire, dam sire, and dam’s dam sire were all good milers but not known for their ability to get the ten furlong classic distance. If he is crossed with speedy type dam sires he will not produce that classic type runner. Grandsons of Northern Dancer will create a 4X5 inbreeding to Northern Dancer and a grandson of Mr. Prospector creates a 4X4 inbreeding to Mr. Prospector. If you use a dam sire form either of the above lines I would recommend adding stamina in the dam’s dam spot with the Ribot or Roberto lines.

His runners have not made a start on turf yet. He will likely produce the odd turf runner but expect his runners to like the dirt. His runners should be best between eight and ten furlongs. His runners will likely bloom early as two year olds and three year olds. He should enjoy a good freshman year in the sim.
