Stack (6183)

I am a big fan of little used sires. Over the weekend I was looking for stamina influenced sires to cover this week. I came across a few I liked but a publication with a similar name turned me onto Stack. He has some very solid and interesting numbers as a real life stud. Not sure if that can or will carry over to the sim but it seems worth a shot.

Real Life- Stack is by Nijinksy. His dam sire is Tom Rolfe and his dam’s dam sire is Double Jay. He is all stamina with a 1.00 dosage index. The thing that really catches the eye is he is the international leader in percentage of stakes winners from starters at 32%. That is 8% higher than second ranked Danzig.

He is a half brother to Forty Niner and twenty-four years of age so probably not much breeding left in him. He was only an average horse on the track with four wins and a place from eighteen starts. He started his stud career in Peru and was the top stallion in Peru for 1992,1993,and 1995. In his first eight crops in Peru he only produced 13 two-year-old maiden winners from 114 runners. In his eight crops in the United States he has produced 5 two-year-old winners from 140 runners.

The cross in real life that has produced sixteen stakes winners was with daughters of Forever Sparkle (not in the sim). Forever Sparkle (Secretariat X Ribot) loved long distances on the turf.  Almost all of Stacks real life runners run best on turf and not a lick on dirt.

His best runner to date is probably seven-year-old Stay Forever who just this year has started to come into her own. She has won a couple of graded stakes this year and looked as though she would make a start in the Breeder’s Cup Filly and Mare Turf. She was not entered though.

Sim Life – Not much to speak of in this category. Stack has 11 sim runners and not one of them is all that good. Several of them seem to be useful claimers and mostly his runners have been raced in sprints. None of them seem to be able to run well long distances. Surface seems to not matter much. His averages are better on dirt but overall that is pretty disappointing.

Breeding Suggestions – I think the key to getting a good runner from stack in inbreeding to Ribot. It has been done once in his 11 runners in the dam’s dam spot with Cannonade (4X5). That runner is probably his best runner posting mid 80’s speed figures on turf and dirt and being a lightly raced five year old. Ribot will appear in the fourth generation of Stack’s runners so I think choosing a dam sire with Ribot as the dam sire of the dam sire (confusing  yet?) is the best way to go. That would duplicate the real life inbreeding that occurred when Stack was bred to Forever Sparkle mares.

If you have read a few of my articles you know I like the Ribot inbreeding. I do not like the idea of inbreeding him to Northern Dancer or crossing with Mr. Prospector in this case. It has not worked in any of his sim runners. Buckpasser should blend very well with Stack. Secretariat, Turn-to, Damascus and Seattle Slew are also more well known sire lines that should work well. I think some real obscure sire lines may work well with Stack. Long distance loving dam sires preferably.

There are not many dam sires out there with Ribot as the dam sire to the potential dam sire. Majestic Light is probably the best available. Dactylogrpher looks like the best choice to try and duplicate the Secretariat X Ribot breeding that worked in real life. Risen Star is very close (Secretariat X His Majesty) and could be a solid choice as well as dam sire.

It would be worth a try to breed him to dam sires that are grandsons of Ribot to create a 4X4 inbreeding. Key to the Mint and Pleasant Colony would be two very solid choices.

Bargain Bred – Stack could be a pretty successful bargain bred. He is real cheap at the end of the week around ten BPs. Several bargain type dam sires with the Ribot inbreeding come to mind. Roo Art (Buckpasser), Dactylographer (Secretariat), and Our Account (Damascus). If you wanted to try the Mr. Prospector cross with the Ribot inbreeding, Midyan may be the best choice. If you use one of these less expensive sires you can get a pretty solid dam’s dam sire.

Other potential dam sires for a bargain bred would be Lord Avie, Minnesota Mac, Spend a Buck., Sultry Song, Sunny’s Halo. There are lots of possibilities.

What to Expect – Do not expect a two-year-old runner. If you breed a two year old with him expect a slow development process. For a younger runner I would space his starts out and keep stretching him out. I would think his runners will be better on turf and would try to keep them on the green stuff unless the offspring just hates it. Ideally breeding him as a three year old will bring you quicker results. Although it still may take some time for him to develop. Good thing is he is cheap enough you should be able to pass him through claimers early and hopefully get a win. Then try to let them develop in starter allowances.

I noticed some of his runners liked to go to the front of races in sprints. Go ahead and keep stretching his runners out they should love ten plus furlongs so at least try them there.
