Welcome to Knightmare’s Breeding Corner!

Almost everyone who plays the game is familiar with the popular sires such as Storm Cat, AP Indy, Gone West, or Deputy Minister. The breeding portion of the game is my favorite. I love learning about lesser known or overlooked sires. Some are popular sires, meaning most people have heard of them, but they are just not used very much in the Sim. Some of them I have never heard of before. Here is the Breeding Corner I would like to spot light some of these sires to help some of our new players or bring a different perspective to the old Sim breeding veteran.

This week I will take a look at Sultry Song. I chose Sultry Song to be first for a couple of reasons. First reason is because there is good information on him that is relatively easy to find. Second is because he is a great value at the end of the week. Week 2034 he was 39 BPs by the end of the week.

On the track Sultry Song was a grade I winner. He was unraced at age two but made up for that with fifteen races as a three year old. He did not win a grade I until his four year old season where he won the Hollywood Gold Cup (10F dirt), Woodward (9F dirt), and the Whitney (9f dirt). As a three year old he did finish third in the grade I Secretariat on turf. Solid and versatile.

Sultry Song’s pedigree is very interesting. A Quick look on the thoroughbred times stallion directory and you will see these words posted under his picture “Entirely free of Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and Seattle Slew.” It has to be a short list of sires that can claim that. Lets take a look at his pedigree in Sim terms. His sire is Cox’s Ridge (Turn- To), his dam sire is Buckfinder (Buckpasser), and his dam’s dam sire is Damascus. Three pretty good sire lines are represented.

Real Life – Even though he did not race at age two his progeny run well at age two. He might produce a little better turf runner but produces both dirt and turf runners. He seems to produce better route horses than sprinters. When you look at some of his best progeny you’ll notice a variety of bloodlines have worked. Strike the Anvil, No Double and Star de Naskra are dam sires of three of his best progeny.  A couple from the Northern Dancer line are represented Danzig and Theatrical. The Caro line was also in a couple of the pedigrees of his top runners. Two Mr. Prospector mares were bred to Sultry Song and neither was very good on the track. The one thing that kind of stands out is that Nasrullah was present in several of his top offspring.

Sim Life- Simmers have produced better sprinters with Sultry Song. He has been used with quality dam sires like Seattle Slew, Dixieland Band, Nijinsky, and Nureyev. None of his current runners have won a stakes race. Most of his runners are five or older so not a lot of younger runners. In the few of horses that have run well the Nasrullah and Northern Dancer were present.

Breeding Suggestions – I was surprised he produced better sprinters in the Sim especially since he was used with some good stamina influenced dam sires. That would not stop me from targeting a horse that runs best between 8-10 furlongs. I would stick with using dam sires with Northern Dancer and Nasrullah in the pedigrees. The Nasrullah line had several expensive and mid priced sires that I think would work well: Blushing Groom (FR), Mill Reef, Riverman, Torsion, Full Out. The Choices from the Northern Dancer line are endless. I would not be afraid to try many different combinations but I would want to make sure there was some stamina in the dam sires that I choose.

Bargain Bred Suggestion – If I were going to breed a bargain what would I do? Well by Saturday night you should be able to get this combination for a bargain price. Sultry Song X Deposit Ticket X Pass The Glass. Good Luck!
