Unusual Heat (6869)

We will dip into the ranks of sires standing in California. Unusual Heat raced over seas and was a stakes winner. He has a very good production record so far in his young stud career. His sim runners have been complete failures to this point with out even a single allowance winner. He is an under used sire that needs some help.

Real Life- Unusual Heat is by Nureyev. His dam sire is Glacial (DEN) and his dam’s dam sire is Midsummer Night. His dosage index is 1.67 with a good deal of stamina. Unusual Heat was a winner of six of sixteen during his racing career. He was a winner at two and three but he did not get his first stakes win until he was four. He won a couple of stakes race that year and finished second in a grade III race. He did not race as a five year old but at six he came to the United States and won a couple of turf races before being retired.

So far he has sixty-seven starters with forty-eight winners (72%). What is really impressive is that twenty-one of the forty-eight winners have earned over $100,000. His average earning per starter is over $85,000 highest of any sire in California. His average earnings index is highest among California sires at 2.45.

His best runner to date recently upset the field in the G2 Clement Hirsch. Tucked Away has earned nearly six hundred thousand on the track.  Be a Native is the dam sire of Tucked Away and was also the dam sire in another of Unusual Heat’s solid runners. Be a Native creates a 5X5 inbreeding to Native Dancer which could be a key to success.

Sim Life – I eluded to how bad his sim runners have been. He only has twenty sim runners and zero allowance winners. Heck he does not even have a runner that has run over a 90 speed figure. He has been bargain bred mostly and possibly with combinations that do not fit him well.

His two year olds look strong. He has just five two year olds with three of them already winners. All three winners have had upper seventies speed figures and one in the eighties. That is much faster than most of his older runners in the sim. For the most part his runners have earned more money on the turf but his faster runners appear to be dirt runners so far. His real life runners do very well on turf so I would expect him to be a solid turf influence in the sim as well.

Breeding Suggestions – What makes the Mr. Prospector X Northern Dancer cross tick is the inbreeding to Native Dancer. The way Unusual Heat’s pedigree is set up he is a perfect match with dam sires that are son’s of Mr. Prospector creating a 5X5 inbreeding to Native Dancer. That inbreeding to Native Dancer is in his top two runners to date in real life. Here in the sim that has not really happened.

Northern Dancer inbreeding is a possibility but Northern Dancer will be in the third generation of Unusual Heat’s offspring which is a little close up for my tastes. It has worked a couple of times in real life but I would choose to go another direction.

Other lines that could go well are Seattle Slew, Turn-To, Nasrullah, Ribot, Damascus, and Raise a Native. I think however we should concentrate on getting the 5X5 inbreeding to Native Dancer. So we should start with the many son’s of Mr. Prospector. Son’s of Alydar like Turkoman, Easy Goer, Jeblar, Strike the Gold or Saratoga Six. Other more popular grandons of Raise a Native like Affirmed and Majestic Light would also be solid choices.

Unusual Heat (6869) X Affirmed (83) X Mill Reef (3979)

Unusual Heat (6869) X Turkoman (6813) X Slew O Gold (5945)

Unusual Heat (6869) X Jade Hunter (3112) X Ela-Mana-Mou (1902)

Bargain Bred – Unusual Heat gets down into the 30’s BP wise at the end of the week meaning he might be a solid candidate for bargain breds. He has mostly been bargain bred thus far with little success but maybe the right sire cross has not been used. I have had solid luck pairing Minnesota Mac in the dams sire slot with Northern Dancer line sires.

Unusual Heat (6869) X Minnesota Mac (3994) X Nalees Man (4230)

Unusual Heat (6869) X Excavate (1995) X Ballymore (GB) (447)

What to Expect – Unusual Heat was a winner at two and three but did not blossom until he got older. His real life runners seem to be better as they get older so I might not expect them to run at a high level as two year olds. His current sim two year olds have been solid. His runners appear to like both surfaces but I think he may be a better turf producer. Then again breeding him back to the Mr. Prospector line could mean you are getting a dirt runner and he has produced well there. Lastly his runners should be route horses with his solid stamina.
