Urban Ocean (FR)

With the freshman sires series over it is time to jump into a little known sire standing in France. Revelation brought this sire to my attention. I am a huge fan of Sea-Bird and Urban Ocean is carrying on that line. He is inexpensive at the end of the week and you might be surprised by some of his runners.

Real Life- Urban Ocean is by Bering. His dam sire is Miswaki and his dam’s dam sire is Lombard (GER). Urban Ocean has a pedigree full of stamina with a dosage index of 0.90. He was a group III winner over about ten furlongs or 2000 meters. He won four of twelve races lifetime.

His pedigree has Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector and Buckpasser. Northern Dancer will appear in the fifth generation of his offspring and Mr. Prospector will appear in the fourth generation of his off spring. He entered stud in 2002 so his first real life crop is starting to hit the track this year.

Sim Life – Urban Ocean has just thirteen runners in the sim. He has produced pretty well considering the small amount of runners. #16550 Unbridled Horizons (FR) has placed in two graded stakes races in his last two starts including the grade I Sydney Sprint. The rest of the runners are mostly claimers but he has eleven three year olds and they should all get better with age and some are already getting better. He appears to produce better dirt horses to this point although his best runner is a turf runner. His runners are much better sprinting than routing at this point which is unusual considering the amount of stamina Urban Ocean has.

Breeding Suggestions – With all the stamina in his pedigree I would expect a horse that might take some time to develop. I would not fear breeding speed back to Urban Ocean in the least. Grand sons of Mr. Prospector would create 4X4 inbreeding to Mr. Prospector. That is how his graded placed runner is bred (Unbridled). Northern Dancer grand sons would create 4X5 inbreeding to Northern Dancer and could be used well in the dam’s dam sire spot.

The Seattle Slew line should blend well with Urban Ocean.  I also like the Nasrullah line sires Bold Ruler, Never Bend, Mill Reef, Riverman, and Blushing Groom (FR). The strong Sir Ivor line of sires could work well like Zabeel, and Octagonal. Diesis, and other lesser known European lines will likely blend well with Urban Ocean as well. There are tons of options open to experiment with a sire that looks to have a little talent.

Bargain Bred – Urban Ocean is a prime bargain bred sire. He gets down to about 20 BPs by the end of the week. There are several solid dam sires we can use with him to hopefully get a nice bargain bred.

What to Expect – Urban Ocean was a winner at two so he could produce some nice two year olds but his stamina influence leads me to believe it will take some time for his offspring to develop. His top runner in the sim is four now and running his best. He might be a more ideal three year old breeding than two year old. His form on dirt has been very solid so far and he should produce on turf. Expect his runners to do better with distance.
