Retired Mares of the Breeder’s Bowl Part II

This week the Breeding Corner will take a look at the retired mares that have produced runners in this year’s Breeder’s Bowl Sprint, the Breeder’s Bowl Mile, and the four juvenile races. Again we will not be looking at he mares just taking a look at the actual retired mares.

Sprint

Only four of the fourteen runners in the sprint were by retired mares, three were by he mares and seven were scratch breds.

She’s a Smoothy (Final Thoughts) – Mr. Prospector X Danzig. She’s a Smoothy had three career wins with more than $50,000 in earnings and a top speed figure of 92. She’s a Smoothy has three off spring Final Thoughts here is her second. The oldest is already retired by Point Given that only won one race from thirteen starts. She also has a two year old by Smarty Jones who has broken her maiden.

Vanilla Storm (Sly Cat) – Storm Cat X No Robbery. Vanilla Storm only ran two races before being retired a long long time ago. She was not really given a chance to show anything on the track. She has two offspring Vanilla Storm here is the first. She also has a two year old by Posse who has broken her maiden but does not look real promising to this point.

Lady Dawn (Empire of the Sun) – Mr. Prospector X Grey Dawn II. Lady Dawn won six races from nineteen starts with one stakes win, and a couple of other stakes places. She earned $180,000 on the track with a top speed figure of 108. Lady Dawn has four off spring Empire of the Sun being her second foal. Her first foal by Danzig was stakes placed and a winner of five races. She has a three year old by Cat Thief that is winless from eighteen starts. Her two year old is a restricted stakes winner by War Chant.

Huge Royalty (Huge Glacken) – Atticus X Alydar. Huge Royalty won five races including a grade I race. She was in the money in stakes races twelve times and earned over $600,000 on the track with a top speed figure of 111. She has four foals Huge Glacken here is her third, a three year old. Her oldest was a stakes winner by Scatter the Gold. Her second foal is four years old by Maria’s Mon. She has just one win from fourteen starts. She has a two year old by Elusive Quality that is win less from five starts.

This is an interesting collection of mares. You have two stakes winning mares and they have produced other stakes placers so far. The lightly raced Vanilla Storm does not have enough foals to really judge. She’s a Smoothy is a mare that has produced one really good runner, one really bad runner and her other runner looks somewhere in between.

Mile

Here we have just three retired mares that produced runners, four he mares and seven scratch bred runners.

Pam Without Dancer (Mizzen Dizzie) – Rahy X Rambo Dancer. Pam was not good at the track never winning a race in twelve tries. She earned just over $2,000 and had a high speed figure of 77. Surprise, surprise Mizzen Dizzie is her first offspring. She was not used at all last year and this year has a two year old by Mizzen Mast the same sire as Mizzen Dizzie. In two starts the youngster has looked solid thus far.

Crabby Niner (I am Scheming) – Forty Niner X Danzig. Crabby had one lifetime race a week 61 start in an allowance. She has produced three runners I Am Scheming is the first. Her three year old is by Cats and Dogs and has one win in seven starts. Her two year old is by Dixieland Band and has one win in four starts.

Intolerant Deputy (Echoes) – Deputy Minister X Damascus. Intolerant Deputy was winless from seven starts with a high speed figure of 77. Echoes is her first foal. She has two other foals. Her three year old is by Crafty Prospector and retired with one win from nine starts. Her two year old is by Fusaichi Pegasus and is stakes placed with one win from six starts thus far.

These three mares were not very good on the track although Crabby Niner might as well be considered an unraced mare. Each one of these runners is the first foal by their mare. Past that the jury is still out on these mares.

Juvenile Dirt

Just five mares produced Breeder’s Bowl Dirt Juvenile runners.

Fight Earn(IRE) (Virtuoso) – El Prado (IRE) X Fit to Fight. Fight Earn (IRE) won four times in twenty starts earning over $90,000, and running a high speed figure of 90. Virtuoso is Fight Earn’s third foal. Her first two were not very good. Her first happened way back in 2001 and that runner retired winless from eighteen starts. She has a three year old by Street Cry (IRE) with one win from eight starts.

Alybene Roar (Thor ‘Aus’) – Roar X Alydar. Alybene was pretty solid on the track with ten wins including a stakes win, over $130,000 in earnings and a lifetime best 103 speed figure. Thor is her second offspring. Her first was bred in 2002 by Crusaders Sword. That offspring won four races and over $90,000 in purses.

No More Storms (So Slew Me) Seattle Slew X Storm Cat. No More Storms only had two wins but was stakes placed. She earned over $90,000 in purses and had a career best speed figure of 95. She has one other foal besides So Slew Me a three year old by Dynaformer. The three year old is stakes placed and has earned over nearly $150,000 so far.

Big Boy Bobby (Stone Boy) – Crafty Prospector X Kris (GB). Big Boy Bobby was winless from seven starts and Stone Boy is her first foal.

Flow Futuristic (Crypto Flow) – Carson City X Sunday Silence. Flow was a solid mare on the track with three wins including a stakes win. She earned over $130,000 on the track with a career best speed figure of 100. Crypto Flow is her first foal.

As expected the mares that are producing runners in this juvenile race tend to be mares that did well on the track. There were two mares that produced a good foal in their first try but the mares have produced other good runners besides their Breeders Bowl runner.

Juvenile Dirt Filly

Half the field was produced from retired mares, one from a he mare and six were scratch bred.

Pro Cat (Pro Dubai) – Storm Cat X Mr. Prospector. Pro Cat won one race in only four tries, earning $25,000 and had a career best 93 speed figure. She showed some talent in her few starts and has produced very well. She has three foals total. Her oldest is a four year old by Danzig who is stakes placed with seven wins. Her three year old is by El Corredor and is a three time stakes winner.

Sally Roo (Skippy) – Buckaroo X Relaunch. Sally Roo was a very good runner with six wins from nineteen starts. She had three stakes wins and placed in a grade II race earning $342,000 and had a lifetime best speed figure of 103. Skippy is her third foal. Her two older foals are winless. Her oldest was is four by Thunder Gulch and now retired winless from five starts.  Her three year old is by Summer Squall. He is winless from three starts but has not raced since week 2125.

Costa Brava (Ampuria) – Rahy X Storm Bird. Costa Brava had nine career wins, three were stakes and she placed in a grade III. She earned nearly $250,000 on the track and had a lifetime best 112 speed figure. She has one other foal a three year old by Sadler’s Wells that just cleared her first level allowance condition. She has just two wins but is already over the $100,000 mark in earnings.

Crooked Buda (Whip Smart) – Seattle Slew X dam Nine Tractor X Forty Niner. Crooked Buda won three times, earned $58,000 on the track and had a career best 107 speed figure. Crooked Buda’s dam Nine Tractor was solid with just over $80,000 in earnings and a career best 93 speed figure. Crooked Buda produced two other foals.  A four year old by Sadler’s Wells that retired with two wins and a three year old by Devil His Due that also has just two wins.

Ms Slew (Thnxmsslew) – Seattle Slew X Mr. Prospector. Ms Slew won fourteen races including a grade I, grade II and grade III. She won twelve stakes overall earning over one million on the track. Her career best speed figure was a 116. This is her first foal but I bet it is not the last good one she produces.

Tin Soldier (Rosette) – Kingmambo X Danzig. Tin Soldier only ran two times before being retired. It was a long time ago but neither race was impressive. Rosette is her first foal and will probably end up being her best foal.

I’m Born to Run (IRE) (St Goar) – Kalanisi (IRE) X Mining. I’m Born to Run won only one race in her career, earned over $60,000 with a lifetime best 93 speed figure. St Goar is her first foal.

This is a pretty solid group of mares. You can see the stakes winners produce other good runners. You also see a couple of mares that have produced a good runner with their first foal.

Next week we will conclude this series with a look at the last two Breeders Bowl Races the Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Filly Turf. Till next week Good Luck and Good Breeding.
